Is INR Accepted in Nepal?

Yes, Indian Rupees (INR) are widely accepted in Nepal. From 15th December 2025, INR 200 and INR 500 notes are legal in Nepal. Indian citizens can carry up to INR 25,000 in cash of ₹200 and ₹500 notes when visiting Nepal. However, we would like to suggest that you carry ₹100 notes because it is easy to exchange everywhere in Nepal. Indian travelers visiting Nepal can carry up to the equivalent of $5,000 in Indian rupees, instead of the current cap of INR25,000.

We would like to suggest that you please exchange Indian currency for Nepalese Rupees (NPR) at authorized Money changers or banks in Nepal.l. So it is always a good idea to carry some local currency for smaller transactions. If you are searching for Nepal holiday packages, we have a special tour package for Indian travellers. UPI payments are increasingly available in many tourist areas, but still not everywhere.

Official exchange rate is fixed: INR 100.00 = NPR 160.00

Yes, Indian Rupees (INR) are widely accepted in Nepal,₹100 notes are accepted almost everywhere, and ₹200 and ₹500 notes are now legally allowed up to certain limits, but some smaller shops may still hesitate to accept them. NPR works better, so we would like to suggest that you exchange your INR into NPR at authorized places for ease of use during your stay in Nepal, local markets, and rural areas.
